Managing Disappointments

Yikes! You know how it feels. You've done all your preparation, you put your heart and soul into it.... and then NOTHING!  You show up, but where is everybody?!!  Or, you thought everything was going great and in your favor and then BAM!.....nope, not happening.  You may want to curl up into a ball and cry or beat a few pillows.

Although you might still need to do that, I think the best way to handle this is to approach life by simply putting your best foot forward - doing your personal best, speaking with clarity and sincerity and then letting go of any expectations to an outcome.  It makes it harder to feel disappointed when you step forward this way (although I know this is not easy for some of us who are hard on ourselves - which is me BIG TIME).  But think about it... if you did your best and you communicated with impeccability.... then...you've completed your responsibility successfully and that should be enough.  Okay.... or at least a helpful and healthy outlook when you don't get the results you were hoping for.

So go ahead - cry...beat those pillows...and lick your wounds. I completely understand. But at the end of the day, keep moving forward knowing you did your best and start to look ahead at new possibilities!

Staying on Course With Your Dreams During Transition

I think one of the hardest things to do when you are in transition is to stay on course towards a new path - especially when following your dream. It is so easy to re-create the old way even if the old way was not in your best favor but because it is a familiar and comfortable feeling, it seems easier or more natural. It's crazy, but most of us do this. We like to punish ourselves. If you feel you are choosing a painful choice or the hard way, it may be a good idea to ask yourself "why?" before taking that next step.

So how does one handle staying on course towards his/her dream during transition?

1. If at all possible, do not choose the "to survive" choice especially if there is a choice! Really think carefully and get in tune with your feelings and how your body reacts for clues. If you are struggling with a decision, it's probably for a reason.

2. On a daily basis, stay clear and true to your ultimate goals so that your steps of today still, in some way, support the direction of your new path.

3.  Break out of the "comfortable" and stretch your imagination and your ability to get out there and make it happen. Don't hide behind the computer. Get out there to be heard and seen.

4.  Connect to others that support you and are of like-mind. You NEED support that believes in you and can uplift you. NO Debbie Downers.

5.  If you have determined it is ultimately necessary to choose a direction that is of immediate necessity, give it a time frame (a beginning and end) to be clear about it's purpose. This will help you understand it's value so that you can ensure it still plays a part towards your ultimate course of transition.

And by all means, NEVER, EVER GIVE UP on your dreams. It is a journey, your "soulistic adventure" and you owe it to yourself to seek, find and become YOUR happy, healthy and fully expressed self. The world is waiting for you.

"Pylon" The Support To Keep Moving Forward

What? You may be asking. First let's look at the definition of pylon:

py·lon  /ˈpīˌlän/
Noun
1. An upright structure that is used for support or navigation, in particular

I took this picture near where I live along the Hudson River. They are pylons that used to support a dock that extended out into the water along the bank of the river. The pylons that remain have, to me, it's own unique artistry and symbolism as I observe them as I pass by on my walks. Each time, a beautiful and unique picture is constructed depending on the mood of the water, the weather, the time of year and the time of day. The tide ebbs and flows, exposing them completely at times while at other times, they are covered almost completely with water so that you'd never know they even existed.  Various species of birds will often use them to perch upon while grooming their feathers or gracefully glide around the obstacle course while minding their own business.

As we move through life, we go through many transitions that are not always easy. We experience many moods, different seasons of life, rough waters and calm times. Throughout it all, it's assuring to have a support sytem so you don't get stuck; so you can stay strong and secure despite possible setbacks or times of uncertainty.

The pylons remind me of how important it is to have support in order to keep me moving and to also be mindful that this support can come in all shapes and sizes.

Below are four PYLONs of support to consider to keep moving you forward:

1. Build a Strong Foundation of Self - Prepare now by taking the time to build a strong foundation of self in body, mind and soul. By doing so, you will be in a better state of health and well-being required to stay sturdy. By taking care of yourself, you dig those roots deep into the earth, creating strength through self-love, self-compassion and self-responsibility in order to maintain balance during temporary rough seas.

2. Connect and Live with Purpose - Practicing meditation or prayer, connecting to a Higher Source or taking time to be in silence is a great way to ground yourself with a connection to an internal knowing that you are supported no matter what and that there is a reason for everything. Connection to Spirit, your soul's purpose or inner knowing provides not only comfort and peace but also an outlook of discovery for finding the lesson or golden nugget that provides growth.

3. Associate with Like-Minded People - No sense hanging around people that bring you down. Create a tribe or a sacred circle of your own like-minded peeps of friends, family, co-workers, etc. that "get you" and "support" you no matter what.  Keep your distance from naysayers or those that zap your energy of positivity and growth. Onward and upward, so choose wisely.

4. Be Open to the Stranger - Here's a goodie. Keep open to that earthly angel that suddenly appears and then disappears. I've had this happen on several occasions. Coincidence? Probably not. These may be people that show up and are there to help you during your worst moments or somewhere along the way and that's it! So keep a watchful eye and be open to receive. Support comes in many shapes and packages.

What's your support system?

A Symbol of Support and Adventure: My 4-Wheeled Companion's Anniversary

Fyt Phyllis...Love and support at first sight!
Perhaps silly, but who cares. I believe thoughts and feelings are sensed to give us messages, otherwise, we wouldn't be sensing them, right? The fact remains, whether you feel like you made it up or not, the experience exists or existed, so now it's just a matter of what you do with it.  Dismiss it or gain insight from it.

My spiritual awareness and cause to live my purpose stepped into high gear back in Dec 2011. During the first part of 2012, I began to move my life forward towards my vision through the support of several key individuals and my own efforts and perseverance of bringing forth my vision through creative processes and mindful application to root my ideas into earthbound reality and formation.  Along the way, in April of last year, my 4-wheeled companion, a Mazda3, showed up and has since been carting me around assisting me along the journey of my own soulistic adventure and the further development of my business, Soulistic Adventures.

So here's the story:

I had just picked up my new car the day before I was scheduled to represent myself as Soulistic Adventures at a booth at a holistic health fair. On my way to celebrate after the fair, a friend of mine asked what I named the car. I laughed as I've never done that before, but jokingly replied she's Fyt Phyllis (you will know why fit is misspelled as you read on). Oddly, when I got the car, the license plate did indeed have the letters "FYT" on it. My life has been all about fitness, so right off the bat, I knew this was "to be". Coincidence? Let's move on....

A couple days later, I asked myself... why did I choose "Phyllis" and I kept mumbling the name over and over and then it dawned on me while brushing my teeth one morning.  OMG! I thought out loud.  It's Dad! It's my Dad who moved on to the heavens over 6 years ago - his name was Philip....and this is his way of showing me that he is here to support me on my journey of purpose. You see, my Dad was a very quiet man, however, he supported me the way he could and often it was simply shown by driving me around to all my gymnastic classes and competitions and then later, to the mall where I worked at a clothing store while in high school before I had my driver's license. He may not have known what to say or do, but I knew he meant well and I was always glad and thankful he was there.

Real or not, the symbolism touches my heart and chuckles my soul every time I get in the car and "get moving" to create, explore, show up and connect as I pursue to live my dream, follow my purpose, and to build upon my passion to bring what I can offer to you through Soulistic Adventures. You see, I gave up my car back in 1996 when I moved to New York City from Los Angeles after a painful divorce and so getting a car again was huge and a turning point for me as I began this next chapter of my life.  No more pain, I vowed.  Only moving into the direction of my dreams.

Fyt Phyllis is a symbol of freedom, exploration and support all rolled up in one and deserves a big shout out!  Happy Anniversary Fyt Phyllis and thank you for supporting my life's soulistic adventure!  We've only just begun!

What messages have you received that symbolizes support for you?

Popping Out Of The Bubble

I just became stunned moments ago when I came upon some news on a website related to the work I do with the Nia Technique and found out that a fellow Nia instructor just passed away suddenly.  I just spoke with this person on April 4.  We were going to plan a visit together in person. The news I read about her sudden passing was published on April 17 and I just read it today - April 23. Wow! I just can't believe it.

When matters like this happen, it can easily pop me out of the bubble of my current state of awareness, separating myself into a state of  "whoa...just what the heck AM I doing?".

Does whatever I was worrying about really seem necessary now? Nope, not really. What about all the work I've poured into my life goals; can I be lifted up and away at any time from earthbound toils, missions and aspirations no matter how heartfelt and commissioned with the best of intentions? Probably. Does whatever I was obsessing over in my thoughts and feelings now carry such importance? No. Is my motivation all for nothing? Hopefully not. Am I prioritizing right? Not always.

Popping out of the bubble is good. It makes you take a moment to check in with yourself. To re-assess and align your values with your actions no matter what outside messages and influences are bombarding you. It assists with creating movement towards awareness that can lead you down a path of further growth, self-discovery, spiritual awareness and other forms of well-being.

Yes, popping out of the bubble may be triggered by a variety of circumstances - some good, some not so good - but trust there is a gift to gain despite the perceived mess.

What Will You Do When You Grow Up?

Then (me as a child)
Now (me as adult)
Remember being asked that question at different points in your life? For some of us this same question still comes up as adults perhaps from sarcastic individuals who don't believe in your aspirations or even from our own selves as we make light of being in a place at this time in our lives where we pose this same question; all with a slight chuckle but with a twinge of angst.

In all seriousness, think about it. Somewhere deep inside you may be asking yourself this question because you now find yourself wondering "What have I done with my life?", "Why am I not happy?", or  "I really wish I became (blank) rather than (blank)", "Why did I follow pain instead of joy to appease someone else?", "What is this day to day existence about anyways?"

Maybe, just maybe......if you went back to that time in your life when you had no concept of worrying about anything else except BEING a child, expressing yourself through activities you naturally gravitated towards because you loved it, you were good at it and it made you happy that that would be your answer as to what you will do when you grow up.

Not a typical career path when you get "older"? Says who?.... "out there?".. so create it! Make it happen!  If more people would do what they love, it would support and nurture the greater good of humanity towards a more balanced state of health, well-being and prosperity for ALL. You were born with a natural gift and talent specifically to be shared with others.  You were not a mistake - you have a purpose.  We are not robots last I checked. We have feelings, emotions and a soul driven with purpose.

So, don't make life harder. Be a part of change by following your childlike spirit of authenticity by going back to that place of uninhibited expression and take complete ownership of YOU - now that is growing up!
