I don't know about you, but by the time January 1st finally gets here, I'm more than ready to go! For some, the holidays can be a trying time with the bombardment of outside messages pushing and brainwashing us all to turn into jolly-go-lucky beings throwing out all regards to sense-ability.
For me, if I'm not careful and I don't take time to connect to my inner being (my soul) through meditation, prayer, or some self-nurturing practice, I can end up angry, sad and sarcastic because I've allowed my negative opinions about the whole commercialized side of the season win over my thoughts and as a result, I disconnect to joy and my ability to create my version of how I wish to celebrate the season in a way that is meaningful to me.
This also includes New Year's resolutions. My sensitivity and opinion towards outside messages brings a sarcastic edge to my thoughts around these common year-after-year issues people face. It's not like we've never heard these before. The list below proves this point - found from many sources including Time magazine and USA.gov.
Top 10 commonly broken New Year's Resolutions:
1. Lose Weight and Get Fit
2. Quit Smoking
3. Learn Something New
4. Eat Healthier and Diet
5. Get out of Debt and Save Money
6. Spend More Time with Family
7. Travel to New Places
8. Be Less Stressed
9. Volunteer
10. Drink Less
We've seen this forever, right? WHY? Why do we keep getting stuck making resolutions in these same areas year after year?
My Sarcastic Side
My sarcastic side says, BORING. Heard that before. Why are so many stuck in what feels like this is common sense by now? Seriously. Can we move on please??????
My Practical Side
My practical side kicks in and says, there is a real issue here folks. Somewhere along the line, people are not:
(a) getting the right information to educate themselves;
(b) taking responsibility to understand not one size fits all. We are all unique and you have to use the information as a guide - not as the rule - YOU are your own best source of knowledge to understand your needs in body, mind and spirit. It's up to you to seek, understand and get the support to help you along your path;
(c) taking a stand to question outside sources and resources and saying NO to questionable practices - learning to lead from intuition for yourself and to help make positive/responsible change for our communities at large; and/or
(d) setting realistic goals to align action in support of being in integrity with your self - but you have to really want this - if you don't, you are just fooling yourselves - and the worst thing to do, in my opinion, is to dishonor yourself and you can't hide from yourself. Wherever you go, there you are! It's no one else's fault but your own at the end of the day. Do the work - figure it out then consciously take steps that support your direction.
My Soulistic Perspective
My soul side says, whoa! Hang on silly. I am your number one ally. I want the best for you, so why don't you just sit still for a moment and listen. I have your best interest at heart and will never let you down, but you need to tune in and reconnect - connect to the wisdom of your own body, mind and spirit and let's align new habits to support your well-being in all areas of life.
Try stopping the merry-go-round of madness that has disconnected you from your best interest. Get a hold on the outside influences of criss-crossed messages that keep you in poor health or stuck in old habits that don't serve your best interest and keep you in an endless cycle of picking the same boring New Year's resolutions.
For example, you know what's best for your body. It's a no brainer to exercise and nourish the body's we were given. Tune in within to find your answers as to how you need to do this specifically for your unique YOU. No need to obsess about outside appearances or about projected images of what we should all act, feel and look like. Start by nurturing yourself from within and you will naturally take action in support of your well-being. Before you know it, your outside appearance will transform. No matter the desire, need or goal, this basic simple principle of going within, tuning into your soul guide, will lead you towards the transformations you seek.
HOW YOU ASK?- This is no mystery and it's been said before by many. All you need to do is to start doing it and making it a practice - just like brushing your teeth.
3 Easy Steps to Define Your New Year's Re"soul"utions (and beyond)
Step One: Find a space and sit still in silence at least once a day - at least 5 min (but go as long as you need). An ideal situation would be to do first thing when you wake up (set a good foundation) and last thing before you go to bed (recapping to learn and let go).
Step Two: Focus on your breath. It will help you to gradually let go of your mind's endless thoughts and residual feelings/emotions, allowing them to be experienced so they are acknowledged and can easily flow along and disappear.... until... you become closer being in a state of just that - BEing
Step Three: When complete, jot down any messages you may have sensed - a recurring thought, something you visually noticed all of a sudden - big or small. Just notice and apply your awareness towards the goals and actions you need to take to support the goals you feel connected to from your inner being.
Well, that's my perspective.
